Setting the Table: By the Sea

Channeling Contessa By the Sea

I think we can all go ahead and be a tiny bit jealous of anyone who lives by the beach. That is, unless you’re somehow not a fan of endless ocean breezes, seafood that actually tastes like the sea, and a view that looks a little something like this. (I didn’t think so.)

In any case, whether you’re headed for the coast any time soon or not, a beach-inspired table setting can work for any summer get-together. The shades of blue, textures of coral and shell, and sandy, sun-bleached hues manage to be elegant and low-key at the same time. If you have any seashells lying around, they’ll add undeniable dimension to your centerpiece, while the menu can be kept as simple as you’d like.

| Menu | Lobster rolls (mini ones would be adorable – as an appetizer!), Fish Fillets with Tomatoes, Squash and Basil,  Balsamic Grilled Vegetables with Basil Quinoa, Homemade Ice Cream Cake

Four Days in Colorado

Colorado 1

A couple of weeks ago I took a quick trip to Colorado for the 4th of July, and have been meaning to share a few favorite photos with you! Let me just say that the heat wave this week has left me wishing like crazy for the cool, dry air that I left behind.

I’ve always felt like my heart belongs in California, so I’ll really use any excuse possible to travel west. In this case, I went to visit a friend from college (hi, Emily!) who just finished up her grad program at CSU.

Colorado 2

It was a short trip, but sometimes those are the best types. We really fit so much in. One of our first stops in Fort Collins was a tour of the New Belgium Brewery. I learned that Colorado is really into beer. As for me? Not so much. I sipped away on their lightest beer, appropriately named ‘Sunshine.’ The S’mores Porter was also a favorite.

Colorado 4

Of course, no trip to Colorado is complete without a hike in the Rocky Mountains. The view was incredibly beautiful, and near the top of the mountain there was an unlikely lake waiting for us. Dipping our toes into the cool water was the best reward I could have asked for. (I totally blamed my slow pace up the mountain on the high altitude.)

Colorado 5

While I was there, we attempted homemade English muffins, using Christina Tosi’s recipe. Just look at those nooks and crannies.

Colorado 7

We spent the actual day of July 4th walking around Denver. They have so many amazing shops and restaurants, as well as the Capitol Building to visit. The city guide from Design*Sponge came in very handy, and led us to the restaurant we chose for lunch — The Kitchen. I’d highly recommend it!

Colorado 6

I especially loved this building. We saw it on our way to one of my favorite bookstores I’ve ever been in.

Colorado 8

That night we went to see the Rockies play, which made for my first official baseball game. Confession: we had a contest to see who could snap the most awkward picture of the players stretching beforehand — so mature. As a bonus, there were (loud! incredible!) fireworks after the game.

Colorado 9

Although by the end of that night I was practically falling over from jet-lag, I’m glad I stayed awake long enough to light a few celebratory sparklers. It was the perfect way to end the holiday.

It was a quick trip, but I loved every minute of it. I’m sure I’ll be back, so until next time, Colorado!

A Closet to Covet

closet

One thing that I’ve come to realize about myself is that I can be perfectly content in small spaces, as long as they’re well-organized and beautifully decorated.  The one exception? Closets, of course! Every time I come across a picture of a beautiful walk-in closet, I can’t help but to stop in my tracks.

Because of my propensity for design-related daydreaming, The Coveteur has long been a favorite site of mine. Many of the closets featured are noteworthy solely due to their size (and the amazing labels they contain), but other designs have extra details that make them stand out. See a few of my favorites below, plus find a few tips for maximizing the space you have now.

Storage-maximizing built-ins

Tips for loving the closet you have now:

1. Swap out seasonal items: Heavy coats are obvious, but also storing things like lighter sweaters during the summer will free up more space.

2. Add artwork: Even in the smallest closet, a favorite picture can brighten things up, and will make the space feel unique to you.

3. Keep favorite items on display: If you have a walk-in closet, creating a unique display (like those seen above) will make favorite items even more special.

4. Buy matching hangers: Preferably slim ones! It’s the cheapest upgrade, and takes no time at all.

5. Organize by color: Storing clothes by color will impart a sense of organization, no matter what your space is like.

Weekend Wishes

Bake: with lavender (It turns out that there is so much you can do with lavender! From cookies to lemonade and lattes. I’ve had my eye out for some of the culinary variety ever since I spotted this Lemon Lavender Shortbread recipe. I finally hunted it down a the Greenmarket yesterday.)

Climb: a tree (In the off chance that you don’t have a tree to climb… just do anything that makes you feel like a kid again. Summer is my favorite season, but I often have to remind myself to actually enjoy it.)

Experiment: with s’mores (I love these creative variations from Oh Joy! I’m pretty serious about my s’mores, but have to admit that these look intriguing.)

On the hottest days of the summer it’s easy to forgo food altogether in favor of a refreshing, icy beverage. I’m not talking about gin and bourbon infused libations — although those are great, too! — but rather simple drinks you can enjoy all day long. Start your day with cold-brewed iced coffee, have a mid-day fruit-infused pick-me-up, followed by creamy horchata after dinner. These types of drinks are all I’ve been dreaming about as of late. Do you have a favorite?

Short Story

denim2

There really is no resisting the allure of a great pair of jean shorts. They’re just so classic and amazing in every way, don’t you think? With the fourth of July coming up, I’d love to hunt down the perfect pair to create a timelessly American look.

denim3

As you may have guessed, I’m currently obsessing over denim shorts with blazers. It’s the perfect laid back, yet not too casual balance. However, I find that both of those items are particularly tricky to pick out.

Much like jeans, there is not one denim short for everyone. Here are a few of my favorites, although I must admit I’m pretty partial to the classic.

On Our Bookshelf |June|

39ded3db2ed53d08bef77fc5b9658b6d

It’s the last day of June, and we thought we’d sneak some last-minute book picks from this month. We’d love to hear what you’ve been reading, as of late!

Unknown-1Clara // VB6: I can’t help but snatch up anything by Mark Bittman. I really respect his philosophy on food, so when a friend alerted me of VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00, I immediately downloaded it on my Kindle. As much as I love dairy and meat from time to time, I wholly support many of the tenets of a vegan diet. Though you might not know it from the recipes I post, I make a point of not eating too much meat, stay conscious of the way heavy amounts of dairy make me feel, and try to make vegetables present at every meal (still working on breakfast). If you’re aiming to have a more plant based diet, but don’t want to give up meat and dairy entirely (like me!), this book is a great tool for making simple but significant changes in the way you eat.

UnknownSarah // Lean In: Apparently I couldn’t help but to jump on the Lean In bandwagon. You’ve likely all heard of it, but have you had a chance to pick it up yet? While it’s not the sort of book I would normally gravitate towards, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. I loved getting glimpses of Sheryl’s life and hearing about her mistakes and successes along the way to becoming Facebook’s COO. Plus, it’s incredibly well-written, and might just be the perfect balance to all those beach novels you’ll likely read this summer!

Gilded-Age-by-Claire-McMillan-198x300Lauren // Gilded Age: My current read, a modern-day spin on the Edith Wharton novel “The House of Mirth,” was kindly sent to me by author Claire McMillan herself. Though a huge classics reader, I never read Wharton’s original story so I can’t directly compare the two. If you haven’t either, it might even be interesting to read them together. Set in contemporary Cleveland, Gilded Age follows Ellie Hart, a socialite who returns to her hometown after a scandalous divorce and period in rehab, and her misguided attempts to remake herself. It’s an engaging tale that keeps you turning page after page to find out what happens next–perfect for an easy, summertime beach read.

Topics of Pinterest: Summer Treats

Channeling Contessa pins 1

The best part of summer is arguably the treats that come with it. Ice cream and popsicles, along with berry buckles, pies and tarts are all in frequent rotation.

What summer treat have you enjoyed most recently? Lately, my nightly indulgence has been a scoop of coconut milk ice cream topped with crushed graham crackers and dark chocolate chips — so simple, but so good! Here are a few of the summer desserts on our ‘to make immediately’ list.

Setting the Table: Festive 4th

channeling contessa 4th of july

Is there anything more quintessentially American than the 4th of July? It’s one of the more nostalgic holidays for me, especially because I have such happy memories of summer in general. I love the smell of charcoal grilling, the first strawberry shortcake of the season, and staying outside well after the fireflies make their appearance.

The basics of our patriotic color scheme include some of my favorite things — navy, red, white & stripes — although I think subtlety is definitely key. They make me want to do things like watch baseball and eat hot dogs (even though I like neither sports nor meat)! This year I’ll be traveling for the holiday, but if I were cooking I’d likely be making my favorite portobello burgers, this incredible salad, and s’mores made over the grill — my favorite thing, ever. How will you celebrating?

PS. Isn’t that sprinkler picture just perfection? It’s by Julia Stotz, and her whole portfolio is definitely worth a peek!
