Weekend Wishes

Weekend wishes 8

Shop: J.crew’s fall collection (I hope to see some pieces in person later today. These jeans and shoes caught my eye. Also, this nightshirt will be mine : ). On a funny note, I’m pretty sure my dad still has these actual sneakers from the 1980′s!)

Eat: nonstop tomates (This Tomato Crostata with Honey Thyme Glaze is at the top of my list.)

Update: your bedding (I’ve been spending some extra time with the lovely Becca lately, and it has me re-thinking my whole approach to bedding. Stay tuned for her fall collection!)

Toasted Hazelnut Lavender Biscotti

Warm, muggy summer weather generally means that your oven gets to take a quick vacation from baking up favorite recipes. Instead, ice cream and s’mores find themselves in heavy rotation — which seems to be fine by most everyone. However, I’ve sort of become obsessed with biscotti recently.

img 4

It all started when I had the classic Anise Almond version from a favorite coffee shop a few weeks ago. One bite, and I was suddenly on the hunt for the perfect recipe. A few experiments plus one impulse greenmarket purchase later, these emerged from my oven. The lavender is floral, but in no way overwhelming. I think that these will become fast friends with your afternoon iced coffee.

Toasted Hazelnut Lavender Biscotti

  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon culinary lavender
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour (or more all purpose)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup hazelnuts, chopped

Topping:

  • 3 tablespoons sanding sugar
  • zest of 1/2 a lemon

Preheat oven to 35o°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Toast hazelnuts: Place hazelnuts on a second, unlined baking sheet, and bake about 4-5 minutes, or until golden. Promptly wrap in a tea towel to let them steam. After a few minutes, rub hazelnuts together within the towel to release the skins. Discard skins and set hazelnuts aside.

In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating until fluffy. Stir in lavender and extracts, followed by flour, baking powder and salt. Fold in toasted hazelnuts.

Divide the dough in half, and form into two 2-inch wide logs (wetting your hands will prevent sticking). Next, mix up the sugar and lemon zest for the topping. Moisten the tops of biscotti logs with water, and sprinkle on the lemon sugar.

Bake about 30 minutes, or until top is set and the bottom is golden brown. Let cool a few minutes before cutting into slices. Bake biscotti slices, cut side up, for 8 minutes. Flip and bake for 8 more minutes, then cool on a baking sheet.

Weekend Project

Homemade Cereal

I have to admit, cereal is one of my very favorite things — I just never seem to grow tired of it! However, I do like to think that cereal either falls into the breakfast or dessert category. Breakfast always includes whole grains, fruit, and not much sugar. Dessert types on the other hand, are much more fun.

While I have been making my own granola for a while (and rely on it most mornings), it never crossed my mind to try making other varieties from scratch. Of course, after seeing this post yesterday for Homemade Cinnamon Toast Crunch, all that has promptly changed. While I doubt I’ll be making it weekly, I think homemade cereal would be perfect for overnight guests, sending to a friend, or just a sleepy weekend morning. What do you think, would you try it?

Here are 3 recipes that caught my eye:

Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Cocoa Puffs
Nutty Bran Flakes

This all black outfit with a pop of color caught my eye. (And bright shoes are quickly added to the wish list for fall.)

cc ice cream

In these last few weeks of summer, I’ve been really into simple recipes that make a big impact. That’s why I fell head over heels for Joy’s ice cream sandwiches using Ritz Crackers. The sweet ice cream paired with salty, butter crackers is brilliant. I now even love them crushed and sprinkled on top of a sundae!

This font speaks to me — which isn’t too surprising considering I love all of Emma’s work. Some days I think that I like the cozy feeling of coffee shops more than I do actual coffee.

Something about tying a scarf in your hair looks so easy-breezy. Now, if I could just figure out how to actually tie one…

The use of color in these photos is beautiful. They’re doing a good job of dragging me out of my minimalist rut. (You should really check out the whole portfolio here.)

I’ve been wanting these mossy-green boots since early this spring. Now that they’ve been brought back for fall I can’t decide between this color or a rich navy. Help! Which one would you choose? In my wild and crazy dreams I’d be getting this pair.

The work of this Cape Town artist, Katrin Coetzer, manages to be so detailed and free at the same time.

Lastly, I love the shape of this olive tree. I bought a tiny one in college and just repotted it for the fourth time — it’s growing like crazy! (PS. You can even grow your own.)

What’s been on your mind so far this month?

Weekend Wishes

Weekend wishes 8

Make: Blackberry Cornbread Buckle (I’ve always loved blueberry buckle, but this new twist is something I can’t wait to try. Hint: since they’re basically coffee cake with fruit + funny name, they’re great for breakfast, too!)

Wear: pretty prints (I’d definitely like to add more subtle prints like this to my wardrobe for fall. I just love the colors in this shirt.)

Update: your kitchen (Have you heard about the gorgeous new kitchen shop, Provisions, from Food52 yet? You’ll need to stop by to look at the beautiful photography, if not for the everything bagel spice blend.)

Try: a new pair of jeans (My favorite jeans are often from Madewell, so it’s exciting to know that they just gave their denim line a complete overhaul. Trying on jeans and new shoes always reminds me of back to school. What clothing item signals fall for you?)

Wear: perfectly imperfect hair (I’m obviously a fan of J.Crew clothes, but I think their true genius lies in their marketing and styling skills. The fall lookbook — as always! — left me wishing I could look as effortlessly pulled together as those models. This article sharing the Secrets of the J.Crew Undone Bun is a perhaps a start.)

Make: no-churn ice cream (Would you believe that I’ve never made homemade ice cream? It’s one of my favorite treats, but I don’t have an ice cream maker. For this reason I always bookmark recipes that don’t require one, and I think this Coffee and Cacao Nib variety needs to make an appearance before summer is over!)

Between summer traveling and lazy Sundays spent reading in the sun, I’ve been picking up a few more books than usual lately. Although I’m happy to be past the days of required summer reading, (I’m still not entirely sure how I made it through The Odyssey) the fact remains that summer and reading go hand in hand. We’d love to know, what books have you picked up lately?

// What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship, and Love: A few weeks back a friend recommended this book to me and my first thought was, “Can a book written by a real housewife really be good?” She assured me it was, so I gave it a shot. I happily inhaled it in less than four days. What Remains is the memoir of Carole Radziwill, the former wife of prince Anthony Radziwill (cousin of the late JFK Jr.), who lost her husband to cancer and close friend Carolyn Besette Kennedy all within a three week span. Her depiction of these tragic events, with her working class upbringing and career as an award winning television producer all weaved in, make for not only an incredible story but refreshing commentary on the fragility of life and what’s most important.

13642950Sarah // The Aviator’s Wife: History has long been one of my lesser subjects, so I rarely find myself picking up books from the historical fiction genre. However, the Aviator’s Wife — the story of Charles and Anne Lindbergh — was an interesting look at what the family’s life was like behind the scenes. Although Charles was a national hero for advances in aviation, his peculiarities left much to be desired for those closest to him. This book proved not only to be enlightening (remember the Lindbergh Trial?) but also incredibly well-written.

tumblr_m66fcuezWU1r5ik1zo1_500Lauren // Beautiful Ruins: – I’ll be honest: I judged this book by its cover. I initially grabbed it off the bestsellers shelf at the bookstore a few weeks ago because of its beautiful Italian coastal cover. And then upon a closer look, NPR’s claim that it is “a literary miracle” (plus other reviews on the back and inside covers) sold me. As it turns out, that enticing cover and glowing set of reviews didn’t lie–Beautiful Ruins is one finely crafted story. Starting with the arrival of an American actress in an Italian seaside village in 1962, where she catches the eye of a young innkeeper, the book then jumps ahead 50 years to present-day Hollywood. It has an inventive plot that spans both continents and decades, making for an engrossing summer read.

Eat: the perfect grilled cheese — with tomato! (I look forward to tomato season because of this sandwich. My secret is adding honey mustard as well. Do you have any grilled cheese secrets?)

Enjoy: a chocolate milkshake (To go with that sandwich, of course. Joy knows a thing or two on this subject.)

Wear: breezy basics (Lazy summer days call for t-shirts and a minimal amount of effort.)

What are you up to on this late summer weekend?

Topics of Pinterest: Summer Hair

Untitled-1

I’ll be the first to admit that I too often find myself stuck in a ‘hair rut’. I know it takes just a few minutes to try something a little different — but when those few minutes come between the time I wake up and have to run out the door, it often isn’t going to happen.

The one exception is in the summer, when the heat and humidity combine, and I suddenly can’t stand having hair anywhere near my face. Throwing my hair into a ponytail gets old quickly, so I love turning to simple but polished styles, such as these, for inspiration. What’s your go-to style?

For more inspiration, see our ‘Perfect Hair‘ Pinterest board. I can’t get my hair cut without looking it over.

Setting the Table: By the Sea

Channeling Contessa By the Sea

I think we can all go ahead and be a tiny bit jealous of anyone who lives by the beach. That is, unless you’re somehow not a fan of endless ocean breezes, seafood that actually tastes like the sea, and a view that looks a little something like this. (I didn’t think so.)

In any case, whether you’re headed for the coast any time soon or not, a beach-inspired table setting can work for any summer get-together. The shades of blue, textures of coral and shell, and sandy, sun-bleached hues manage to be elegant and low-key at the same time. If you have any seashells lying around, they’ll add undeniable dimension to your centerpiece, while the menu can be kept as simple as you’d like.

| Menu | Lobster rolls (mini ones would be adorable – as an appetizer!), Fish Fillets with Tomatoes, Squash and Basil,  Balsamic Grilled Vegetables with Basil Quinoa, Homemade Ice Cream Cake
