Dressed to Entertain: Farm to Table Dinner

Farm to Table | Perpetually Chic

After five years of living in Madison, Wisconsin, home of the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country, the farm-to-table movement has become near and dear to my heart (like it has to Clara). We’re lucky enough that almost every restaurant in our city celebrates local ingredients, even prominently displaying a list of the farmers they work with–which is part of why Madison was recently touted as a top “foodie paradise.” And we’ve made a trip to the farmers’ market our Saturday routine for several years now, loading up on fresh produce, organic meat and eggs, locally-made jams and bread, and cheese (of course)!

This time of year is the very best–the market is ripe with an amazing array that still includes summer favorites like heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn and peaches, but also now boasts fall crops like squashes, cauliflower and apples. It’s the time of year when [Read more...]

Dressed to Entertain: Ice Cream Social

Ice Cream Social | Perpetually Chic for Channeling Contessa

When August rolls around, we usually see summertime heat peak before things start to cool off and we welcome fall. So what better way to beat the hot temps and celebrate the last weeks of summer than an ice cream social? Lauren here today, and in dreaming up this month’s edition of Dressed to Entertain, I knew I wanted to channel an ice cream shop, ’50s vibe into a “today” outfit. The result? A slightly retro, almost pin-up girl look updated with sherbet colors, high-waisted shorts, and a tied-up button down.

Sure, you can totally make your own ice cream or frozen yogurt. And more power to you if you do! But I’ll let you in on my little secret, time-saving trick: Pick up a couple pints of your favorite flavors of gelato and crush a few different toppings into very fine crumbles. Scoop each flavor of gelato into balls, and return to the freezer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let the gelato scoops refreeze, then roll each ball into the crushed topping, and refreeze them all once again.

These little “gourmet” ice cream sundaes are super fun–and easy–for impromptu summer parties. And you can be creative with your pairings…I matched mango gelato with unsweetened coconut flakes, chocolate gelato with crushed peanuts, and sea salt caramel gelato with chopped chocolate.

Dressed to Entertain: Picnic in the Park

Picnic in the Park | Perpetually Chic

Come July, we’re lucky to have a pretty cool excuse to get in at least a few picnics: Every Wednesday, an outdoor concert series is held on the lawn of the state capitol. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra plays and locals flock to the park, filling the grass with a patchwork of blankets. Thousands of people come out each week, so it becomes one giant city picnic—a perfect mid-week break to enjoy with friends. While it may not seem like traditional entertaining since it’s not hosted at home, the very same rules apply for picnicking—gather a group of friends, make some delicious food, and wear something perfectly appropriate for the occasion. So today I’m sharing a “picnic in the park” look you can recreate with ease!

My simple formula for picnic dressing: One breezy sundress plus a colorful pair of sneakers. I love the easygoing, girly-meets-sporty pairing of dresses with sneakers. The trick is to keep your hemline high to balance out what’s on your feet. I opted for a white floral babydoll dress and green sneakers for a pop of color. They wound up coordinating with my quilt, but you don’t have to be so matchy-matchy!

Sneakers can be kicked off as you lounge and relax. And keep jewelry to a bare minimum—this is not the time for fussy bangles, cocktail rings and large dangling earrings.

Like the outfit, I keep our picnic menus minimal too, since I’m usually preparing them ahead of time so we can grab and go after work. My favorite picnic dishes include Chickpea & Tuna Salad, Kale Market Salad, or my mom’s special Avocado Chicken Salad. Fresh fruit, cheese, and French bread or artisan crackers always make an appearance too. And for dessert, I usually make it easy on myself by grabbing a selection of specialty chocolate bars or picking up fine chocolates from one of the many great chocolatiers in town.

Dressed to Entertain: Backyard Barbecue

Backyard Barbecue | Perpetually Chic for Channeling Contessa

Ahhh, summer. That season of abundant sunshine, meals prepared on the grill, and weekend evenings sitting outdoors watching the sun set. It’s simply my favorite…isn’t it yours? Lauren here, and with summer barbecue season kicking into high gear, I thought I’d drop in to show you how to dress the part. A backyard barbecue is inherently a casual affair—invite friends over, grill up some delicious food, play a few lawn games while you wait, and hang around outside until the sun goes down. But casual doesn’t mean short on style!

Backyard Barbecue | Perpetually Chic for Channeling Contessa

Casual does mean comfortable, which is why I lean toward sundresses or shorts paired with cute tops. You can’t go wrong with a goes-with-anything pair of white shorts, and I love the floral pattern of this boxy Madewell tee. Gosh, the last time I had a pair of white sandals, I must’ve been in preschool. In fact, that pair had straps across the toes and around the ankles just like my grown-up version! I love that these have a little block heel for some height, yet still strike that casual summer feel (and won’t get stuck in the grass).

Burgers and BBQ are great for backyard get-togethers, but I honestly start to get a little bit sick of those old standbys. That’s where grilled pizzas come in! From this Peach & Gorgonzola Chicken Pizza to the Smoked Chicken Pizza with Poblano Pepper Sauce we made this past weekend, I love getting creative with the toppings. Another favorite: pesto with shrimp, feta and pine nuts. Serve up a few options on cutting boards, and let guests try different slices. Another approach is to make personal-sized pizzas, and let each guest choose from various toppings.

This tee has a bonus—a peekaboo back to let in the breeze.

For dessert? Keep it simple and grill fresh peaches and plums, sprinkle with a little cinnamon and brown sugar, and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The perfect ending to a stress-free night!

Dressed to Entertain: Mediterranean Dinner

My entertaining style is definitely of the more laid-back variety. That’s probably why I, Lauren, like summer entertaining the best, as this time of year just lends SO naturally to gathering friends together over simple, fresh food. As we head into the warm months, I know I’ll be hosting as many casual get-togethers as possible on our patio. Who’s with me? So today I wanted to share a little outfit inspiration for your summer entertaining needs.

Between daydreaming about our next vacation (we’re thinking Greece & Turkey) and anxiously waiting to use a set of melamine plates (in brilliant shades of blue) that I snapped up a few weeks back for outdoor entertaining, I’ve being feeling completely inspired to host a Mediterranean-style al fresco dinner at our home. Add to that the fact that our current favorite dinner (as in, we’re eating it weekly) is to set out a feast of Mediterranean dishes like spiced chicken kabobs, apricot-mint couscous, homemade hummus, cucumber-tomato-feta salad and grilled flatbread, it seems only fitting that we take dinner for two and turn it into dinner for a crowd of friends, very soon.

Inspired by the Mediterranean theme of the food and a casual yet chic vibe, I paired some of my favorite summer staples—white jeans, comfortable espadrilles and a straw fedora—with a just-perfect top in my favorite color combination. I love how the top’s easy, breezy fit balances out the skinny leg of the jeans while also showing off your sun-kissed arms. The white stitching around the edges of this top also had me at hello—I’ve said it before, but I’m a total sucker for good details!

Would You or Wouldn’t You: Home Meal Delivery

home meal delivery

Have you guys noticed the rise of healthy, home meal-delivery services? Maybe you’ve tried one of these programs for yourself? They just recently started popping up on my radar online, and then Gwyneth featured a round-up of her favorite food delivery options on Goop last week. I (Lauren) totally get the allure. Most of us are crunched for time these days, caught in a constant cycle of busyness but also a desire to eat healthy. So enter the food delivery program that allows you to skip all the prep and the trip (or more) each week to the store. Instead you get perfectly-portioned, nutritionally-balanced ingredients delivered right to your door. Some options let you DIY, making the chef-designed meal with the exact items included; others just come ready made.

I think it’s a fabulous concept…for some people, especially those who don’t enjoy cooking. But to me, I just couldn’t do it! My mom instilled in me a love for cooking, even though it didn’t really kick in until my mid-20s. I love the research, menu creating, list making, shopping, preparing and cooking–all of it–that goes into serving an enjoyable meal. I love to taste the fruits of my labor, and especially to have others enjoy my efforts with me. Now doing the dishes afterward? That’s another story. I’d definitely be open to a service for that! A clean-up-my-cooking-mess service anyone? Yes, please. So what do YOU think about the whole home meal-delivery trend–would you or wouldn’t you?

Dressed to Entertain: Mexican Fiesta

fiesta outfit

Of any entertaining theme, I’d have to say that throwing a fiesta is when I (Lauren) am most in my element. Pops of brilliant turquoise, icy-cold margaritas, piñatas and papel picado banners overhead, and a big batch of guacamole within easy reach? Heaven. So with Cinco de Mayo next weekend, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to share a colorful and festive entertaining outfit for one of my favorite holidays.

fiesta outfitfiesta outfit

To make things extra festive, I threw together this super simple Cinco de Mayo garland with some white tissue paper and baker’s twine I had at home. I’m not crafty, but this is one DIY anyone can create!

fiesta outfitfiesta outfit

To keep with the theme, I wanted to wear something really bold and bright. This Anthropologie dress was a perfect find a few months back–jewel-toned and flecked with tiny dots in an incredibly comfortable fit. I added a beaded belt for extra interest, then searched for the ultimate summertime shoe to complete my look. The multicolor woven wedge of these sandals? So obsessed. They were a little splurge, but I love the wow factor the wedges add and can’t wait to wear them with dresses, shorts and white jeans all summer.

Of course, I had to get a true south-of-the-border touch in, so I potted tiny cactus and succulents into turquoise votives to set on each place setting. I also used beaded cuff bracelets with fun tribal patterns as the napkin rings–they double as wearable favors for your girlfriends to take home at the end of the party!

To serve? Try setting out a Grilled Avocado bar, a fun alternative to guacamole and sooo delicious! Clearly tacos and margaritas are a must–some of our favorite “taco & tequila” pairings: Fish Tacos with Lime Slaw & Mango Margaritas or Beer-Braised Pulled Pork Tacos & Watermelon Margaritas. This Mexican Street Corn is also a perpetual crowd pleaser, and there’s no better way to treat your guests than to finish the festivities with Tres Leches Cake piled high with fresh berries.

How are you planning to celebrate on May 5th?

Face-Off: Natural vs. Conventional Beauty Products

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to mess with a good thing. Having obsessively tried many beauty and skincare products over time and settled into a skincare routine I (Lauren) am rather attached to, I’d hate to think about changing that regime and the awesome, effective products I love. But two articles I read last week–from Vogue and The New York Times–made me think. Is that youthful complexion, super hydrated skin, or perfectly rosy flush worth exposure to potentially toxic ingredients?

Here’s the thing: The jury seems to still be out on the exact harmful effects of certain synthetic ingredients, found in many beauty products, that may get absorbed by our skin. And like Vogue’s fashion writer, it might take pregnancy before I’m inclined to temporarily shelf all my favorite products. But I do think it’s kind of disconcerting that while scouring food nutrition labels has become second nature for most of us, we might be forgetting to examine those cosmetic labels. Because when you do…gosh there truly are a lot of ingredients that make my head spin! Yours too?

I love seeing more companies than ever trying to make beauty products with fewer chemicals and more natural ingredients. That’s definitely an important reason why brands like Fresh, which uses natural ingredients like sugar, soy, rice and clay, and Caudalie, whose skincare is infused with vine and grape extracts, are two of my favorites. But I certainly can’t claim that I’m paying close enough attention that I’m avoiding all bad-for-you chemicals like parabens or phenoxyethanol that may be lurking in products sold by big beauty brands.

I think we’re only going to see more natural beauty products on the market, which is a great trend as we become more aware as consumers of not just what’s going in our bodies, but also what we’re putting on our outsides.

I’d love, love to discuss because I know many of you probably have strong opinions on this topic! What’s your threshold–do you use only ultra-holistic, all-natural beauty products like those sold at Whole Foods? Maybe you even make your own food-based products at home? Perhaps like me, you pay some attention to ingredients? Or do you think we’ve all just become overly neurotic and don’t overthink your beauty purchases? I’d love to hear your stance!

Dressed to Entertain: Spring Brunch

spring brunch

With the first day of spring this week, I’m sure I (Lauren) am not the only one ready to turn over a new leaf. A fresh season seems like a fitting time to get out of winter hibernation mode and welcome a few girlfriends over for a sunny Saturday brunch. Or maybe with Easter just around the corner, you’re planning on hosting a Sunday morning meal for family? Either way, I’m back today with an outfit that’s perfect for the occasion.

spring brunch

Vibrant, saturated colors abound in spring fashion this year, and the color-blocking trend is far easier to master than you might think. In this case, I paired blueberry, emerald and marigold hues–all on the same side of the color wheel. Whenever I wear this much color, I always stick to solid pieces and tone down the accessories.

spring brunch

For fun, I did throw on some vintage rhinestone accessories that picked up the colors I was wearing but didn’t compete for attention. Together, it’s a playful, cheerful look for hosting friends that is still completely comfortable and easy going at the same time.

I dressed up the table in our kitchen nook with a big bunch of chamomile flowers–all the green of the stems and leaves and the tiny daisy-like flowers screamed spring to me. And if you’re looking for a full-proof brunch menu, I’ve got you covered, too. My favorite plan:

  • Grapefruit-mint mimosas (grapefruit juice, champagne, mint leaves)
  • Granola and fruit yogurt bowl
  • Fresh sourdough bread and jam (I love apricot and raspberry, pictured here)
  • Leek and Gruyère frittata

Do or Don’t? The 4-Hour 40-Course Tasting Menu

no-menu-restaurants

You know the names. The French Laundry in Napa, the famous-but-now-closed El Bulli in Spain, and Charlie Trotters in Chicago (also now closed!). In Manhattan, Eleven Madison Park and Per Se. With reservations almost impossible to get, and chefs in charge of both dining time (likely several hours) and menu (multi-course tastings of whatever they please), the meals will cost you several hundred dollars- at least. These restaurants have paved the way for a tasting-menu approach that celebrates the chef as an artist and is only gaining in popularity around the country. But a recent article I (Lauren) read in Vanity Fair questioned the shift in power from diner to chef: With that kind of price tag, doesn’t it matter- at least a little- that the chef have an interest in what and how much I want to eat?

While I would likely not choose to dine at one of these celebrated restaurants over others solely based on their fame, the article left me thinking. Isn’t there something magical about being at the mercy of a great chef? I love sitting back and letting a chef guide my palate. At a nice restaurant given too many mouth-watering options, my husband and I will often, willingly, default to the server’s recommendation on dishes. We’ll do the same when traveling, when we may not be familiar with the ingredients on the menu (or if it’s simply in another language we can’t translate). And one of our favorite weeks of the year in our city is restaurant week, when the best restaurants in town each serve their own single, four-course menu set by the chef. We willingly let go of the power to choose our meal and let our dining experience be at the mercy of an expert. And on the topic of hard-to-get reservations–isn’t that part of the fun if you’re lucky enough to snag a seat?

So what do you think: Do you like to hold absolute power and choice over your dining experience? Or are you one to save your pennies to enjoy the luxury of a tasting-menu experience…one where you’ll likely try something you wouldn’t have otherwise? Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
