Birthday Girl: The Big Two Six

Oh birthdays…. I think if I just had this cake, all would be right with the world! I have to admit, birthdays can be a little tough for me some years. Does that ever happen to you?  I tend to take the day to over-analyze my life instead of just enjoying it with a piece of cake. It’s a great recipe for disaster (in case you needed one!).

I was feeling a little nervous about this one, but luckily thanks to Brandon’s encouragement and some quality mother daughter shopping, I was able to snap out of my birthday funk just in time to enjoy the day.  All this birthday talk got me thinking about previous birthdays and some of  the amazing celebrations I’ve had. So, while I’m ringing in twenty-six with a little break from the kitchen, I thought I’d share some stories!  Here’s a fun snapshot of Clara birthday past:

Four My fourth birthday party was epic- no joke.  My mom was doing set design for a theater company at the time so for my birthday party she made tons and tons of little cars out of card board boxes.  She painted them all really fun colors and designs, and every kid had a little car to “drive” around. There was even a toll booth!

Ten My tenth was when I got my ears pierced! Is that still a big deal these days? Or do parents not care anymore and let their daughters get them whenever? It was such a big deal to me and I was so excited.

Twenty I turned 20 while I was studying abroad in Paris (I know, poor me).  To celebrate I went out to dinner with friends and then we decided to go to the Ritz Carlton for cocktails. We each had just one drink since they were 25 euros a piece! But it was so fun and fancy, I’m so glad we did it.  We splurged even more and all took cabs home.  The cabs in Paris are often luxury cars, so they felt extra special. I can still remember riding home in a Mercedes and driving along the Seine at night- it was magical!

Twenty Four Four my 24th, Brandon and I happened to be in San Francisco.  We had recently watched Top Chef All-Stars and I’d fallen in love with Chef France Hubert.  For my birthday, Brandon surprised me with dinner at Fleur de Lys, Hubert’s famous restaurant in San Francisco. Dinner was amazing and we had a lot of fun people watching while we were there.

What’s your most memorable birthday?  To all the November babies, happy birthday!  I’ll be back tomorrow with a sweet birthday-esque recipe.

  7. Happy birthday Clara! My 26th birthday was my “golden” birthday since my big day falls on the 26th. I always felt about my birthday like I did about New Year’s Eve – like I had to do something really big and special. Therefore, it was almost always a disappointment. As I have gotten older, and had kids of my own, I’ve gotten a little more perspective about my birthday – but I still want it to special. I hope yours was!

  8. The Legal Tart: I totally understand wanting to skip your birthday entirely, I certainly felt that way the day before! One thing that helped though was instead of focusing on the amazing celebration I felt like I wasn’t having, I thought about all the things I was thankful for in my life. I suppose I started celebrating Thanksgiving a little bit early, but it really helped!

Dana: So nice to hear your perspective! I totally know what you mean your birthday feel like New Year’s. I got over my bad mood and was able to enjoy the day- thanks for asking!
