Summer in the City: Butter Me Up Brooklyn

This week, we’re featuring Lillie, and her sweet blog, Butter Me Up Brooklyn. As you can imagine, it’s a baking blog, but the images, stories, and recipes she shares make it truly unique. Lillie has been thoughtful enough to include recipes along with her responses, so be sure to click over and check them out!

1. Favorite restaurant?  Van Horn Sandwich Shop in Cobble Hill hits all my requirements for a favorite restaurant. Close to home and walkable from my apartment, never a long wait for a table, a cute outdoor backyard space, consistently good food and an incredible fried chicken salad with buttermilk dressing.

2. Favorite savory dish?  A quick salad of whatever seasonal ingredients I can get my hands on - right now I’ve been making lots of corn, tomato, and basil salads lightly dressed with a squeeze of lime, olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper.

3. Favorite sweet? Anything fruity and frozen. I am currently obsessed with making boozy slushies. They may be one of the easiest and most satisfying ways to end a summer meal plus they have the added bonus of incorporating wine into dessert, which is always awesome. Blend summer fruit with white wine and freeze until your desired level of slushie is achieved then amaze all your dinner party guests with the perfect warm-weather dessert. (Cherry Wine Slushies)

4. Favorite drink? My go-to cocktail is bourbon mixed with a little brown sugar cocktail syrup, a splash of soda and a twist of lemon but I would happily drink margaritas on the rocks all summer long. (Brown Sugar Cocktail Syrup)

5. Favorite Brooklyn summer activity? Most of my summer weekends involve a blanket, a book, an assortment of snacks and an afternoon spent in Prospect Park.

6. What is one of your favorite recipes? One of my favorite recipes is brown sugar buttermilk bundt cake. As one may have guessed, the main ingredients are brown sugar and buttermilk which also happen to be two of my favorite things. This cake is a winner because it is delicious but is also a little black dress of the baking world. Make it your own by adding in fresh berries, chocolate chunks, spiced pecans, or whatever your heart desires. It is easy to whip together, full of flavor, and a great recipe to have just in case you need a bundt. (Brown Sugar Buttermilk Cake)

Thanks, Lillie! I like the sound of those slushies- they’re a nice twist on all the popsicles that we’ve seen this summer.

  1. Hi Clara,
This is totally random but I was looking up exhibits to take my daughter to on our trip to NYC this January and I saw that your Dad is exhibiting at The Whitney. How wonderful. I’ll be sure to check it out. http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/RichardArtschwager
